Dreaming of an escape to Amorgos Island?

After a big or even a  small wedding, it’s time to escape to a romantic corner for your honeymoon.  What a better place than Amorgos, a small yet most beautiful island in the  Cyclades.  The island is surrounded by crystal clear blue and turquoise sea, which inspired the name to the movie “The Big Blue” .

Amorgos with, its whitewashed  houses and windmills,  picturesque fishing ports  and  amazing beaches offers all you need for an unforgettable honeymoon.  You can pick the best places to stay ideally located, both close to the beach and near a peaceful village.  There are many hotels and studios housed in old Cycladic buildings  all well-equipped for a comfortable stay, and very hospitable staff to assist you.

Discover Amorgos Beaches

Most beaches can be reached by car  sandy beaches or with pebbles and crystal Clear Waters are ideal for swimming any time of the day.    Basic amenities, tavernas, bars and cafes are often found along a beach  yet in some cases you should bring along what you may need like  Mikri Glifada where you can be alone and swim in the clear waters and the famous Agia Anna where scenes of “Big Blue” were filmed.   From Nikouria beach you can take a boat trip to the small island across.

However, Amorgos   is more than just  an ideal beach  destination for your honeymoon. There’s a lot to visit,   historical, cultural and religious sites. You can spend your morning at Katapola, the port, visit the neighbouring   Rahidi and  Xilokeratidi,   have your breakfast  at a cafe  on the waterfront  watching the sailing and fishing boats, or enjoy a meal at a traditional taverna.

Places to visit in Amorgos

On the hill above Katapola  visit the ancient city of Minoa and  Vigla the acropolis of ancient Aegialis where the biggest sculpture of the Cycladic Age was found. The  Archeological Museum in Chora, housed in an old  Cycladic mansion, ‘Sala tou Gavra’  holds an exhibition of historical items  excavated on the island,  dating back  from the Hellenistic, Roman and Early Christian  times.

Going to Chora you see the most famous landmark of the island, an 11th century Monastery of Hozoviotissa, built into the side of the cliff. The monastery was built in dedication to  Panagia, Virgin Mary, and the icon  is carried from there  to all the villages on the island every year. You get a breathtaking view of the  Aegean.   A monk, may give you a guided tour and  offer «psimeni raki»  and «loukoumi».

What to buy?

Then once you reach Chora, you step back in time, with its  13th Century ‘Kastro’ and  windmills,   winding cobbled alleys, and colorful bars, cafes and traditional taverns and  shops.  There you should buy Psimeni raki, a local homemade liquor with flavor of honey, cinnamon and clove as well as hand -embroidered linen to bring back home as souvenir of your honeymoon at the most peaceful and romantic  island of Cyclades.
