San Diego Sunday: What I did (and what I will do next time)

I went to San Diego and didn't do any of the things I'd planned because I got there on a Sunday at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and was too tired to use my brain anymore—for the rest of the day—once I parked my car. I did get to spend some time catching up with one of my “first” LA friends and we made the best of our day by poking fun at passersby (isn’t that what very exciting, very educated people do?), which was a lovely way to end to my weekend/take a break from my never-ending workweek.

My trip consisted of these things: one glass of wine in the Gaslamp Quarter (which looked and felt like a hybrid Key West / Ft. Lauderdale), another glass of wine plus eggplant parmesan plus garlic bread plus ravioli at Fillipi’s Pizza Grotto (a delicious, authentic Eataly-type restaurant/market, but on an itty bitty scale) in Little Italy, and a search for a hotel rooftop where we’d be able to watch the sunset. The W's rooftop was closed for a private party and then we went to the wrong Marriott (aka the Marriott without the rooftop). By the time we got to the right Marriott, which also reminded me of Ft. Lauderdale, we had more or less missed the sunset. Last stop: Little Bar, which is actually not called Little Bar, but Small Bar. My friend said Little Bar once, mistakenly, and since I can be an asshole sometimes, I spent the rest of the night giving it faux names like Le Petit Bar,  Miniature Bar, Tiny Bar and Bar Pequeño. I think I need a second trip south to get a full understanding of what San Diego is.

This is what I had originally planned:

Hotel Del Coronado for its historic beauty and seaside views.

Blacks Beach, because, although it’s a nude Beach, someone told me that the actual beach is one of the prettiest in SD (who knows if this is true).

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies; yes, it’s a research center, and no, it’s not technically open to the public, but they do offer guided architecture tours to the public every Monday through Friday, I believe, at noon.

These five unknown spots that a fellow blogger and California enthusiast mapped out.

Until next time, I'll leave you with this post-sunset picture overlooking the city, the bay and a sliver of Petco Park, which I thought was rather small-looking, but apparently seats over 42,000. My depth perception is terrible, guys.
