In Search of Art in Delhi

It is true that some people find true solace in the arms of art. The admiration of pristine creative thought which manifests itself in the form of a painting, a sculpture, photographs, or a beautiful installation is an exercise that promises immense intellectual pleasure. If you are counted as a kindred spirit among art lovers, and happen to be travelling across the national capital, then you are in luck. In a city like Delhi, which is 1500 sq. km of art and history itself, discovering art is not difficult at all.

From decades old buildings housing hallways of paintings to a modern art exhibit nestling in one of the best 5 star hotels in Delhi, the city is teeming with wonderful art galleries. Let’s take a look at the five you must visit:

1. Art Junction

Where The LaLiT New Delhi | Timing 11 AM – 7 PM

The LaLiT New Delhi is, amongst the few 5 star hotels in the city, the only one to house an Art Gallery which goes by the name of Art Junction. Combined with the tasteful environs of the hotel, the stunning gallery has displayed works of over 5000 artists, both upcoming and established, ever since it opened to the public. If you are looking for exotic artworks, charcoal, watercolour or oil paintings, sculptures, photography exhibits and installations, then the Art Junction is your place to be. Oh, and there is a neat little café tucked inside the space for a hot sip while you wander your gaze.

2. National Gallery of Modern Art

Where Jaipur House, India Gate | Timing 10 AM – 5 PM

When you realize the building that houses the National Gallery of Modern Art is shaped like a butterfly, the art lover inside you gets butterflies in the stomach. The gallery is famous for putting on an exhibit the most comprehensive and significant collection of contemporary and modern art from 1850 onwards. Therefore, this one is surely not to be missed!

3. Delhi Art Gallery

Where Hauz Khas Village | Timing 10:30 AM – 7 PM

Another old one in the city, the Delhi Art Gallery opened in 1993, and, like the National Gallery, houses an extensive collection of Indian art of every kind: modern, contemporary and experimental. You can get a taste of religious paintings, the works of British and Bengali artists, modern political art works, and much more.

4. Exhibit 320

Where Lado Sarai | Timing 10:30 AM – 6:30 PM

When it comes to experimental art, there is no better place than Exhibit 320 to be. The emphasis is on visual expression and artistic experiments to create a stimulating dialogue with admirers and students. If attending art seminars, lectures and talks is your thing, then this art gallery has you in covered.

5. Nature Morte

Where Neeti Bagh | Timing 10 AM – 6 PM

From pop art and conceptual art, to the regular photography and creative installations, Nature Morte has created quite a stir in the contemporary art scene of the city. Established by artist Peter Nagy, Nature Morte is a revival of the 1982-established New York art gallery of the same name.
