Cats on BroadwaySF

I've always wanted to see a real life musical,  so when I saw that the musical Cats was playing at the Golden Gate Theater in SF - we got tickets to go! But as the day neared i began to worry, as the theater was in the Tenderloin district -which has a very unsavory reputation.Luckily given that we have to drive in to Sf from the 'burbs, I had got matinee tickets so we'd make the trip in the daylight. We also decided to look for safe parking close by so we'd have to walk a little as possible. We booked parking via spothero, at 45 Mc Allister Street, and when we got there we found that it was the valet parking of the Proper Hotel :). So we left the car and walked one block to the Golden Gate theater along Market Street. There is a nice wide pavement, and some people on the street of all sorts, but nothing to worry about.

So we had an uneventful walk to the Golden Globe Theater, which incidentally is celebrating its centenary year. It's quite a beautiful building on the inside and out. Once inside we waited in the foyer - the doors open an hour before the show, but the seating starts half an hour before. We had seats in the mezzanine section, (row H ) and they were great seats - we were able to see the stage very clearly. The show began promptly at 1pm and was very engaging. There were lots of families and children, and everyone was very well behaved - no phones rang etc. Half way through they had a 15 minutes intermission, where we stepped out for some very expensive snacks [popcorn and a cherry soda($35/-!)] After the intermission the audience was decidedly more participating, clearly having gotten into the "spirit"of things ;)

After the show it was an easy walk back to the hotel to pick up the car. The staff was very nice and offered us the use of their lounge and water while we waited for the valets to bring the car around. All in all I am glad we didn't allow the reputation of the mean streets of SFs tenderloin keep us from a great show.
