Skystar Ride - San Francisco

Last weekend we decided to try the Skystar wheel, the giant Ferris wheel in San Francisco, to celebrate the start of school. After all its been a year and a half since school has been shut or online (thanks to COVID-19) and we were all just looking forward to a return to some sort of normalcy. The Skystar wheel has been up for  sometime now, but again due to the pandemic we had been worried about crowds and closed spaces, so had given the ride a miss.

You can buy the tickets online, we got 10am tickets on a Saturday - which is the first ride of the day. With us there were 3 other families, only 1 family to a gondola and all of them had bought their tickets online as well, so there was no crowding. Everyone was masked and the ride operator had wiped down each gondola before the ride started. In addition they had open air vents near the top of the gondola,so there was pleasant fresh air throughout. Tickets cost 18/adult and 12/child - so not inexpensive but ok to do as a one time ride.

The Skystar wheel has been set up in the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to celebrate 150 years of this park and it will be there till March 2025. At 150 feet, this is the tallest Ferris wheel in California. The ride lasts about 12 minutes or 4 gentle revolutions, but the views are awesome. On a clear day you can see SF downtown and the ocean too, but the morning we went, it was foggy and even drizzled a bit - yet we had some fabulous overhead views of the Golden Gate Park, the living roof of the California Academy of Sciences and the music concourse.

Add to the excitement of the ride, a pleasant walk through the Golden Gate Park in the morning meandering past the Rose garden, and seeing people run/walk/bike along was a memorable experience in itself. Am sure the view at night with all the lights will be spectacular too!
