Wavecrest Open Space Preserve

A hidden part of the California Coastal trail, and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean wait at the end of a large open space Preserve in Half Moon Bay CA. This preserve is 206 unspoilt acres on the bluffs over looking the Pacific and is a good choice for a easy hike or bike ride or picnic all all 3! The beaches in this region and all along Highway 1 are all pretty special, but this one is quite unspoiled.

To get here you have to go Wavecrest Avenue in Half Moon Bay, or remember to take the right  at the red London Double Decker Bus! At the end of that road, you'll find a baseball field Parking Lot, which also doubles as a parking lot for Wavecrest Open Space Preserve. There is no entry fee, no parking fee, also no restrooms.  Dogs are allowed on a leash.

We got here around noon on an early Spring Day and were greeted by fields of yellow flowers. As we walked along the flowers changed but were still yellow and the finally we say lots of pink flowers as well. There are stunted bushes all over the land and is an important area for wintering raptors  on this coast. There are many meandering dirt trails that are flat and easy, but watch for out wheel ruts and many critter holes.

We walked along the meandering trail towards the ocean, and had a picnic on the bluffs. There are paths down to the beach but they looked quite steep and not altogether reliable so we decided to skip that, but there were a few folks on the beach as well, perhaps they had reached from the Poplar beach side. Hopefully we will return here another time, to spend some more time,do some bird watching or even watch the humpback migration.
