U Pick Vegetables at Cloverfield Organic Farm, El Sobrante, CA

Seeking to learn a little more about Organic farming together with our penchant for open spaces - we looked for, and found (online) an organic farm - Clover Field Organic -- where you can browse, taste and pick your own vegetables and fruits. So off we went to El Sobrante, CA. From I80 you drive along San Pablo reservoir, a scenic drive in itself.

A small sign sends you down a short winding lane to an open parking lot. On one side is a shed and the other side you can see vegetable beds. We were welcomed by Farmer Mike who runs Cloverfield Organic together with his wife Susan. We were given an overview of the layout and a rule to follow " Six for the tummy, one for the bag" ;). On one side of the lot there is an orchard with fruit trees - Kefir Lime, Meyer Lemon, Grapefruit, Plum, Pluot, Valencia Orange, Nectarine etc. Near the shed there is Himalayan berry, olive trees and a Bay Laurel tree.

The vegetable patch starts with herbs, lemon verbena, chocolate mind, apple mint and then there are beds of parsnips, kale, spring onions, spinach, fenugreek, sweet peas etc. We had a great time sampling the veggies and collected a mixed bag of greens - spring onions, spinach and fenugreek as well as some bay leaves. There are also plant saplings for sale, we got lemongrass and aloe vera at $5 each and our little bag of veggies was $10/-. A typical grocery bag full would be $30/-., not bad for organic, freshly handpicked produce. Once we had paid for the veggies, we went in to the farm beyond the vegetable patch - there is a meadow with 3 boarders - horses. Farmer Mike said one of the horses was called Magic was a therapy horse, so we stopped and said hi.
