Let’s Talk About Mother’s Day

My inbox is flooded with Mother’s Day messages…how about yours?

Have you noticed that Mother’s Day has been on a trajectory course and now it’s right up there with Christmas and Birthdays? Father’s Day doesn’t quite get the same recognition.

More flowers and candy are sold on Mother’s Day than on any other holiday…and brunch reservations are off the charts!

I’m coming clean about Mother’s Day.

I LOVE being a mother and nothing has transformed me more than any other experience in my life. It’s extremely difficult to describe the feelings I have about motherhood. Suffice it to say…it’s the biggest, best LOVE this woman has ever known.

Oh…and it’s not easy. Motherhood is definitely not for the faint of heart. Nope…it forces you out of your comfort zone in a million little ways. You have to be brave to be a Mom.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was certain I was going to be a “perfect mother”. Ha! Here’s what I learned.

There is no way to be a perfect mother, but there are a million ways to be a good mother.

Here’s the interesting part about Mother’s Day…most of my friends don’t really want a big celebration around being a mother. Really…most of us just want a day to not do anything that has to do with mothering.

No cooking…no dishes…no laundry…no driving around…NO grocery shopping…no sibling arguments – really…we want a day that has nothing to do with mothering. And for me…I don’t want to go to a crowded restaurants with a lot of noise and overpriced food.

I want peace and quiet. I want to hang out at home with my family and putter in my garden. I’m just being honest.

My 87-year-old Mom never wants to do anything and she insists that I not give her a gift. I ignore her.

This year I’m taking her to The Strawberry Patch Barn Sale and we’ll spend the day together in the country. I’m truly blessed that Mom is here in Franklin with me and I’m celebrating that blessing.

And then…I just got the phone call that has me over the moon. Remember I told you last week how much I would miss my daughter on Mother’s Day? Well…drum roll please…

She’s arriving on Friday to spend the week with me! Do you want to know how thrilled I am? I’m counting the days until I can make my way to the Nashville Airport and pick her up. And you can bet I’ll be early even if her plane isn’t.

I’ll be sharing our adventures over on Facebook and it’s possible I might not be in my office as much, but I know you’ll understand.

So if you stress about what to do or give on Mother’s Day, maybe you shouldn’t. Maybe instead of spending a whole lot of money on flowers or a gift, you write a letter to your Mom and you just love on her. Maybe you save your money and have a peaceful cookout in your backyard. Maybe you give Mom an entire day off to relax.

Maybe Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be a commercial nightmare filled with all kinds of pressure.

And what if your Mom is no longer with you? I still think you can spend time honoring and celebrating the woman who gave birth to you or raised you. You can still write that letter and trust that somehow, some way…she hears you read it out loud because she’s always with you.

Happy Mother’s Day one and all!
