What to do in the Lake District this March

Visiting the Lake District this March comes with many opportunities to enjoy new events, interesting exhibitions and chances to get involved with nature. Last week we wrote about fun things to do in Lake District and things to do in Lake District with kids, but there is a huge range of attractions and events to enjoy, many new for March and many only happening as a one off this coming month. Here are some of the events you won’t want to miss if you visit the Lake District in March 2017.

New Quilting at the Rheged Centre

The Rheged Centre is a multidisciplinary arts centre in Penrith. This new exhibition brings an interesting and original take on the art of quilting. The whole exhibition is designed to challenge perceptions of quilt making and position it as the contemporary craft that it is. Quilts produced by national and Cumbrian makers have been selected for display and all quilts have their own unique and interesting stories to discover.

Many of the quilts on display have been loaned from recognisable names including the Hellbeck Collection. The exhibition opens to the public on 3rd March and will run for just a few weeks, ending on 23rd April. Don’t miss your chance to explore to elaborate quilts, learn more about the art and the stories they tell.

Conservation with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust

The Cumbria Wildlife Trust runs events throughout the year, with many conservation days and chances to give something back to the land. Their range of events in March incorporates many conservation events but also a range of special talks and discussions. The events calendar for March includes talks dedicated to Hedgehogs, Red Squirrel Conservation and Discovering Bumblebees. Many of the talks have practical advice and ways of helping to boost the conservation of these species from your own home too, such as planting bee-friendly shrubs and how to look after injured hedgehogs.

Ambleside Spring Flower Show

A wonderful country fayre that gives you the chance to enjoy the beauty of flowers coming into bloom in early spring, Ambleside Spring Flower Show is always a popular event in the Lake District calendar. As well as the beautiful displays of fresh spring flowers there are cookery displays, handicrafts, classes for children, a raffle and much more. It takes place at the Kelsick Centre in Ambleside on 18th and 19th March.

Fun on the Fells Exhibition

The Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry welcomes a new exhibition in March. From 11th March until 28th October 2017 visitors can come and see this new display: Fun on the Fells: Walking and Climbing in the Lake District.

The exhibition looks into the history of walking and climbing in the Lake District and it is a perfect exhibit to work into your stay if you are planning a hiking and climbing break. The exhibition looks at everything from the earliest climbing pioneers to the politics of people’s rights to roam and hike. The exhibition brings together a range of fascinating and images from the museum’s collection as well as items loaned by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club.

Words by the Water Festival at Theatre by the Lake

A festival of words and ideas, the Words by the Water Festival takes place at the Theatre by the Lake from 3rd until 12th March. Many recognised writers and thinkers top the bill of fascinating talks, readings and more.

Familiar faces from the world of broadcasting, politics and writing come together for this lakeside event. Phil Hammond, A.L Kennedy, Mark Watson and festival president Melvyn Bragg are just some of the names you may want to see. Further political faces will be talking including Alan Johnson and Vince Cable, as well as political commentator Tariq Ali. There is a huge and inspiring programme to look into and it is the kind of event worth visiting the area for on its own.

These are just some of the many events which may bring you to the Lake District this March.
