Top Tips for Taking your Dog on a Lake District Holiday this Autumn

The Lake District is popular all times of the year but it comes alive in Autumn. This has the added benefit of being off peak so better value and less busy and also the additional plus point that if you like to travel with your four-legged friend it’s simply the perfect time. Over a third of UK pet owners now take their furry friends with them when they go away and there’s no reason you can’t enjoy a wonderful Lake District break with your pup. Whatever your breed of dog they’ll be able to enjoy long walks and adventures around the Lakes without the risk of overheating or getting too cold. There’s also a further added benefit if you rent a Lake District holiday cottage as you and your furry friend have your own private space for the duration of the holiday.

The town of Keswick is particularly well-known for being dog-friendly and there are plenty of signs letting you know your pal is welcome in cafes, pubs, restaurants and more. You can even take your dog on a boat across Derwent Water.

If you’re planning to take your four-legged friend to the Lake District this Autumn, keep these tips in mind.

1.     Let them Explore

It can be a worry to let your pooch have free reign when you’re renting a cottage but they need to get accustomed to their new home. Always keep an eye on them but let them explore and ensure they aren’t causing any kind of a mess but dogs need to explore and get to know their new area before they can comfortably settle.

2.    Check for Dog-Friendly Attractions

If you plan to do more than enjoy a range of long walks and rambles around the Lake District, then make sure to check them out before heading off to avoid disappointment. There are many dog-friendly days out in the Lake District from the Bobbin Mill at Stott Park to the Roman Fort at Hardknott.

3.    Consider their Strengths

Some breeds of dog won’t want to go on hours’ worth of walks every day while others will. Plan your itinerary for your trip around your dog and not the other way around. A quick bit of research online and you can find great resources such as Miles without Stiles which offers up many walks which are ideal for less active and older dogs. It allows you both to enjoy your holiday without the need to worry about getting too tired halfway round.

Why Lake District Holiday Cottages Are Right for You (and your Dog)

If you have always stayed in hotels or guesthouses, then it can seem a bit of a change to opt for a holiday cottage. It is a self-catered break so you are in charge of your own time, your own meals and the upkeep of the property during your stay. This is one of the main benefits of renting a private cottage, you can treat it as a home away from home. It adds a level of calmness and makes it easy to get into a familiar routine for your dog.

Taking your dog on holiday can be stressful for them, especially when it comes to travelling and settling into a new environment and a private space which is just for you and them makes it easier to acclimatize. In Autumn you will also find some great deals and fantastic prices on cottages as peak season has settled down. You may also find Autumn more enjoyable for your dog as there are fewer crowds and it is much easier to get around and enjoy the beautiful scenery and local attractions.
