Pompeii is a classic day trip if you are anywhere near Rome.  We arrived by train and spent the afternoon Walking around the ruins.  The remains of the Roman town was much bigger than we expected.  If you have difficulty walking long distances, this excursion might not be a good choice.

The other thing that struck us was that Mt. Vesuvius looked very far away.  It is easy to see why the population was not concerned about a possible eruption.


Most of the items found during the excavations are not at Pompeii.  They are on display in other cities such as Naples.  This was a problem for us.  We were on a cruise ship and traveled a long distance to see Pompeii.  We didn't have time to chase down a museum in another city before the eight hour port call was over.
