Five Educational Places in London to Take The Kids This Summer

Just because school’s out for summer, that doesn’t mean your kids have to stop learning all kinds of new and fascinating facts.

Within just a short distance of the Amsterdam Hotel here in Earls Court, you’ll find a wealth of world renowned attractions that offer the perfect combination of engaging, educational experience and full-on full for the whole family.

Whether it’s science, history, or the arts that have captured the imaginations of your young ones, here’s our guide to the top five educational places in London that they -and you- will absolutely love visiting this summer.

Natural History Museum

Cromwell Rd, Kensington, SW7 5BD

Less than ten minutes away from our hotel on Earls Court Road, the Natural History Museum is certainly a must-visit attraction at any time of year, but it’s during the summer holidays that the world renowned venue really pull out all the stops.

This summer, children of all ages (and grown ups too of course!) will find plenty to keep them fascinated.

The popular Investigate sessions offer kids the chance to take part in hands-on scientific experiences using genuine artifacts that the museum’s scientists use in their work.

Elsewhere, the current Sensational Butterflies exhibition will serve as a highlight of any family holiday in London.

There, you and your young ones will follow a tropical trail through abundant flora and fauna, watching as a vast array of beautiful butterflies flutterby overhead.

En route, kids will have the chance to learn little-known facts about the butterflies (which have been flown in from Africa, Asia, and South America), and even use magnifiers to study the delicate and unique patterns on each one.

Victoria and Albert Museum

Cromwell Road, Knightsbridge, SW7 2RL

Sticking with London educational attractions close to our Earls Court hotel, we come next to the historic Victoria and Albert Museum.

This is literally on the opposite side of Exhibition Road from the Natural History Museum, and offers a number of truly captivating exhibitions and special presentations.

Though the abundant collections of rare artifacts and ornate art works may be more compelling for adults and older children, the museum does offer a number of workshops and special events geared towards younger children too.

Best of all, the Victoria and Albert Museum is free entry, with doors open between 10AM and 5.45PM.

London Southbank Centre

Belvedere Rd, Lambeth, SE1 8XX

Take a short 20 minute tube ride from our hotel near Earls Court Station to either Waterloo (South Bank exit), Embankment, or Charing Cross, and you’ll come to the epicentre of contemporary arts and culture in London.

It’s here at the iconic Southbank Centre where you’ll find a packed programme of free activities, workshops, and performances, many of which are free of charge.

Though the learning experiences here may not be as hands-on as say, the Natural History Museum, visiting the Southbank Centre is certainly a unique way to teach children about world cultures and the arts.

The Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall is open from 10AM to 11PM every day, with associated venue holding to their own opening hours.
