Five Family-Friendly Activities To Do in London With The Kids This Summer

The sun is out, the school holidays have arrived, and now you’re looking forward to spending some quality time with the kids on your big family holiday in London.

There’s just thing you need to take care of first:

Planning what to do when you get here.

To help you out, the team here at the Amsterdam Hotel, London have rounded up our five favourite family-friendly activities in London to do with the kids this summer.

Explore the Wonders of the World at the Natural History Museum and The Science Museum

Less than a 20 minute walk from our hotel on Earls Court Road, the Natural History Museum is a must for family holidays in London at any time of the year, but in the summer months, the iconic venue enjoys a whole new lease of life.

Providing plenty to fascinate kids of all ages (including those big kids at heart!) is full of awe-inspiring exhibits featuring everything from the tiniest bugs to the largest dinosaurs ever known to man.

When you’re done there, cross over to Kensington’s famous Science Museum, where a range of incredible, interactive displays offer an experience that is as wholly enjoyable as it is educational.

See at Show at one of London’s Top Children’s Theatres

Whether it’s The Lion King at The Lyceum or Wicked at the Apollo Victoria, London is famous for its packed programme of hit shows, all guaranteed to delight and enthrall audiences of all ages.

For something specifically child-friendly however, you can’t do much better than the Unicorn Theatre, renowned for putting on a wealth of critically acclaimed shows for young audiences.

As well performances, children can also get hands on by taking part in special workshops where they’ll learn puppetry, dance, and more.

Plan the Ultimate Harry Potter Day

Ever thought Platform 9 3/4 was just the stuff of fiction? Think again.

Take the tube from our hotel near Earls Court Station to Kings Cross, where you’ll find the famous platform between regular platforms 4/5. Whilst running into the wall is more likely to result in sore heads than a trip to Hogwarts, it does open up a whole world of wizarding fun for you and your young ones.

After visiting King’s Cross Station’s own Harry Potter shop, the whole of London becomes your own magic kingdom.

You could for example, visit London Zoo’s Reptile House, which fans of the film franchise will recognise as the place where Harry himself spoke to a Burmese Python in 2001′s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. A plaque commemorating the famous scene is on display in the very spot where it was filmed.

Alternatively, why not take one of the popular Harry Potter Tours, where an expert guide will show you the family all the famous locations used in the films.

And of course, don’t forget to take time out to visit The Making of Harry Potter at The Warner Bros. Studios tour.

Play in the Fountain at the Diana Memorial Fountain

A firm favourite with guests at our hotel on Earls Court Road, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain at Hyde Park is the perfect place to cool off on those warm, summer days.

The fountain itself is a true work of art, and a fitting tribute to one of England’s best loved figures, whilst the flowing water makes it ideal for a refreshing little dip.

A memorial playground also provides plenty of opportunities for your young ones to blow off some steam.

Experience This Year’s Must-Visit Attraction at Shrek’s Adventure, London

An experience truly like nothing else in London, Shrek’s adventure is a stunning, 4D spectacular which catapult’s you and your family into a magical realm which just happens to be the home of the famous green ogre and his fairytale friends.

As part of this interactive adventure, you’ll work together as a team to solve puzzles and discover clues that will help you make it back home. Along the way, your children will love meeting characters from the famous films such as Princess Fiona, Puss in Boots, and everyone’s favourite four-legged wisecracker, Donkey
