Galvin Bistrot de Luxe

Situated in Marylebone on Baker Street, the award-winning Galvin Bistrot de Luxe was the first of the Galvin brothers restaurants. It serves seasonal as well as classic dishes and is regularly voted London’s best french restaurant, With rich, fine food it is a wonderful treat for a special occasion

Having been to Galvin at Windows before we were very excited about experiencing Galvin Bistrot de Luxe.

Arriving late on a Sunday evening the restaurant was relatively quiet but this allowed the staff to give us plenty of attention throughout the night.

It is a warm, relaxed and comfortable restaurant with wood paneling, globe lights and well dressed staff, giving the impression of a grand Parisian eatery.

We began with a sharing starter of whole baked Mont D’or (similar to a camembert but taller) that came with pickles, bread and a selection of cured meats. This was cheeseageddon and would have worked as a starter for six, but we still ate it all, I mean how could we not. Melted cheese. Nuff said.

To be honest we should have gone for the restaurants signature starter of crab lasagne, everyone always raves about it and it wouldn’t have put me in a cheese coma.

For the main we decided on Chateaubriand served with cabbage, potato dauphinoise and a Red Wine Jus. The red wine jus was like crack, I found myself sipping it off the spoon and looking quite “le cochon”

After the enormous starter we couldn’t finish the mountain of steak, incredibly rich potatoes and jus. It was absolutely killer and it got the better of us, so on to dessert which there is always room for.

Dessert was difficult, an almighty and proud blood orange souffle as well as a huge buttery slice of the signature tarte tatin, it was enough to finish us. Both were excellent and a wonderful end to a what had been one of the richest meals we’d ever had.

If you or your date love French cuisine, Galvin Bistrot de Luxe is a must.

Word to the wise, don’t eat as much as we did, the food was very rich and afterwards all you will want to do is go to sleep, so if you are planning on having a more “active” evening choose lighter options.

If you need something to do before or afterwards, book some tickets to see a film at the plush Everyman Cinema down the road.
