Walking through the familiar streets of Kyiv, we do not even suspect that many of the names of the areas originate from the disappeared rivers. And they were so many that Kyiv could well be compared to Venice. In fact, these ancient rivers did not disappear altogether, they are still flowing in the depths of the city. And we walk literally above the water!

Hlybochytsya

Hlybochytska, Nyzhniy and Verkhniy Val streets of Podil are well-known for everyone. These streets were not long time ago because on their place flows a picturesque, wide Hlybochytsya River. Its length was about 20 km. Unfortunately, by the middle of the XIX century the river turned into a dirty sewage ditch. The ditches and drains from all over the city merged here. It was decided to bury it underground, which was done. Now Hlybochytsya under the ground, in the collector, just under the beautiful lime alley, between Nyzhniy Val and Verkhniy Val streets.

Pochaina

The lakes that surround Obolon are the remnants of the once well-known Pochaina River. Kievites received baptism in her estuary in 988. The lower part of the Pochaina flowed parallel to the Dnieper for centuries, separated from it by a sand spit.
About 130 years ago the spit was blurred and Pochaina finally merged with the Dnieper. The upper part of Pochaina partially fell asleep during the construction of the residential area.

Khreshchatyi strumok

Even along the main street of the capital Khreshchatyk, only 300 years ago, the Khreshchatyi Strumok River flows. Prince Volodymyr baptized his army and the supreme knower of Kyiv in the waters of this river. Despite the elitism, Khreshchatyi strumok was hidden in the pipe in the 19th century too. The thing is the river was filled with water flowing from adjacent hills during the rains and was greatly overflowed, flooding the house.
Therefore, the channel of the stream was leveled and enclosed in a huge brick collector, swamped by the earth on top.
Khreshchatyi strumok is one of the first rivers, which was buried in the collector in its entire length.

Klov

The football fans and the visitors of huge concerts at NSC Olimpiyskiy do not suspect that the main matches of the country are … on the Klov River, flowing underground in the very center of Kyiv. It starts near Arsenalna Square, then flows along Klovskyi Descent basin, along the streets of Mechnikova and Esplanadna.
Taking its left tributary the Khreshchatyi strumok, then flows under the NSC Olimpiyskiy. In connection with the building of Kyiv the Klov was buried and mercilessly shackled in pipes in the early years of the 20th century.

Lybid River

Lybid River – one of the former full-flowing rivers flowing in the territory of modern Kyiv. Today, it is enclosed in concrete walls of the collector, only in a few places it made its way outside, flows into the Dnieper.
The name of the river comes from one of the legendary characters – the sister of the founder of Kyiv – Kyi. There is evidence that the river had an important role in the life of the city in the 17th century.
