Moscow Restaurants: Novikov Family Expansion

There is a new Restaurant located at The St. Regis Hotel on Nikolskaya 12/1. The restaurant is called “Ribi Net” that can be translated as “No Fish”. It was opened in 2015 by the Novikov restaurant group famous for its high profile dining venues in Moscow and London. That’s one of the new Moscow restaurants that have emerged after the infamous devaluation of the local currency. In December 2014 Russian ruble fell more than 50% against the US Dollar. All of the imported goods have suddenly become way too expensive. The consumption levels dropped to their lowest levels. A great portion of products served at the restaurants in Moscow used to be imported from abroad. Meat was usually shipped directly from US, Australia and New Zealand. The menu prices had at list to double after the Russian currency collapse.

Moscow Restaurants Lower Menu Prices by Serving Local Products

That’s when the restaurant owners in Moscow started to look around in search for the local suppliers. It turned out there is a small number of quality meat producers. One of them is called Miratorg which is probably the most modern meat production facility in the whole country. In fact it’s a number one producer of beef and pork in Russia today.

So, guys from the Novikov Group that manages a number of high profile Moscow restaurants started a partnership with Miratorg. “Ribi Net” as well as the neighboring “Farsh” have become the main outcome of this partnership. The restaurant’s menu is short and contains all the key meat dishes that will satisfy any meat lover. Steaks, burgers, a number of varieties of bull’s tails, beef cheeks, ribs and many other are all made of the locally raised cattle. This is one of the Moscow meat venues that has its own beef aging cameras. This allows the restaurant’s guests to pick their steak’s aging options.

In addition to the steaks you should try Russian veal “Pelmeni” here. “Pelmeni” are Russian dumplings that have various types of fillings. They are always served with “Smetana” a Russian type of sour cream.
A number of people I talked to confirmed that “Pelmeni” served at “Ribi Net” are quite decent quality. They are definitely not worse than the ones served at the famous Pushkin restaurant but come at a more reasonable price. As the name of the dining venue implies there are no fish dishes at this restaurant. On the other side they serve oysters and several dishes with crab meat.

The relatively small menu of the restaurant is backed up by a large open kitchen. Substantial part of the kitchen is taken by the restaurant’s own full size bakery. This is something rarely met at any of the restaurants in Moscow. In most cases there is hardly any space left for some portable type of bakery.

This way “Rib Net” shows its attention to one of the main details of a dining venue which is high quality bread.

My Friday Visit to Ribi Net

During my last visit to this new Novikov’s restaurant I ordered a portion of the Bull Tail Stew for 580 Rub (about 8 USD), Beef Cheeks with mushed potatoes for 650 Rub (9 USD) and couple glasses of red wine for 400 Rub (6 USD) per glass.

Everything was really good. Beef Cheeks were melting in my mouth. Now after the devalued Ruble the prices in USD have become very attractive considering the class of the restaurant.
This is one of the restaurants in Moscow that are great to visit on a Friday evening.

The location is very convenient just steps away from all the main city attractions. Red Square, Tretyakovsky Proyezd, TSUM, GUM are all just steps away by foot. Most of the Moscow nightclubs can be easily reached within about 15 minutes. On Friday evenings they make music a little louder that gets you into the right party mood.
