When people speak of ski slopes thoughts inevitably turn to exotic destinations like the Swiss Alps or Canadian Rocky Mountains. However, what many people fail to realise is that there are fantastic skiing conditions in the UK itself! Scotland is home to a number of ski runs, in stunning locations such as the Caingorms National Park.

I’ve booked myself into a Coylumbridge hotel for early in the New Year, as 22nd January 2012 has been declared World Ski Day by the International Ski Federation (ISF). Scottish resorts up and down the country have booked a series of events to celebrate the occasion, and I intend to be there to experience them.

As part of World Ski Day, the ISF have decided to attempt to break a world record. The La Molina and Masella resorts in Catalonia, Spain, are hoping to organise the largest ever torch lit parade ski run parade in the world. Over 5000 participants are aiming to take part, and there will be an enormous fireworks display to help illuminate the mountains even more in this magical event which will be broadcast live on TV.

Whilst Scotland may not be able to compete with the world record attempt, there are plenty of other entertaining events on offer. The Scottish Ski Board are aiming to put on a family friendly day of activities, where people can either experience skiing for the first time, or watch the experts in action. Numerous displays are being confirmed at the moment, so if you want to catch some world class skiers Scotland is the place to be.
