Baku: History and Myth

Tags: baku
Baku is not only a stunning city but it suddenly captures you with its obviously long and complicated history. Simply looking at a Baku hotel will have its own story to tell in this city of dreams.

Baku dates back to at least the 1st century AD, according to written sources, but the city became ironically prominent after an earthquake destroyed the city of Shamakhy in the 12th century forcing Baku to be chosen as the new capital city of Azerbaijan.  Over the next few centuries, the city was under attack by various Persian forces and by 1723, Baku surrendered to the attacking Russians who also valued the city as a prize. After several invasions by Russian troops in the 18th century, Russia and Persia signed the Treaty of Gulistan in 1813 which stated that Baku had to be annexed from Iran.

The main reason for this active interest from other countries was simply oil. In 1846, the first oil well was drilled and this led to the expansion of a huge operation in oil drilling. Many investors from all over the world including the British, German, American and French came to Baku for a share of the fuel and by the end of the Century, half of the world’s production of oil was coming from Baku.

In 1917, when the Russian Empire was torn apart during World War I, the Baku Commune took over the city but this only led to further civil war between the Bolsheviks and local Dashnaks. After gruelling bloodshed, the Bolsheviks were victorious and made Baku the capital of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. Baku could only develop itself and rise from the ashes.

Currently, Baku has climbed up to Western European standards and has become a major hotspot for tourism. Revealing itself as a powerhouse, it is attracting more and more visitors each year to the area. A hotel Baku will be ideal if you are exploring the area. Walking down the streets, you will see that they all tell a story. A story of mythical proportions. A story of brutal history.
