A Few of My Favorite Jackson Hole Winter Things

The past couple of mornings I have noticed the classic Sound of Music tune, My Favorite Things has been playing in my head as I walk out to my car to drive into work. Especially this verse:

Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things”

As a born and raised Seattleite there were a few things that stereotypically announced the coming winter to me: the first of those is fairly continuous rainfall and no sight of the sun, second would have been the additional layer of sweaters and knee high boots to my wardrobe, and the third and most Seattle of all was the debut of Starbucks Christmas cups and Gingerbread Lattes, you see them EVERYWHERE in the Seattle area. Here in Jackson my three things have varied throughout the years but generally have included the unearthing of my snowboarding gear and additional under layers of the merino wool persuasion, the hunt for the perfect gloves to keep my fingers unfrozen as I go about daily tasks, and the countdown to opening day (currently: 21 days, 22 hours, 58 minutes and 3 seconds!)

My snowboarding gear has been unearthed, merino layers taken up real estate in my closet and my perfect gloves were received for a Christmas gift last year- Kinco Leather, waxed and branded with the Wyoming Cowboy. (You too can have a pair of your own, as these gloves are custom branded by a local here in town, and sold at the Jackson Hole Resort Stores.) Winter in Jackson Hole is definitely a completely different experience from my wet youth in the Pacific Northwest. It may be a few degrees cooler here, but it is not the bone chilling wet cold, and I can certainly do without the months of sunless days and drizzle that Seattle winters always brought. There is however something to be said for the joy a Starbucks Christmas Cup can bring to your morning routine...

To be clear, I am not one to say that old Howard Schultz has created the perfectly roasted bean, in all honesty there are many other local coffee shops that I generally frequent, and would guide you to should you ask, perhaps because I am still very bitter over the loss of my beloved SuperSonics. However, should you ask our team here at Snow King where the Starbucks is, we can now guide you to a bonafide location just a few blocks away on Town Square. Starbucks has come to Jackson! Now I have a lovely combination of my Seattle and Jackson winters...

…Steamy Gingerbread Lattes in red Christmas cups
Devinely warm gloves that keep my fingers toasty
Endless powder riding that leaves my soul satisfied
These are a few of my favorite things…

The snow has begun to consistently fall in Jackson, though the accumulation hasn’t been enormous, the temperatures have been perfection for creating that one thing all of us adore- powder.
