Watching My Hoya Grow: Savoring the End of Summer

Tags: hoya

As much as I love traveling, I love to be home too.  I've been a bit of a lazy hermit the last two weekends.  After all, isn't it o.k. to be a little lazy at the end of the summer?    I've rediscovered my home, cleaned out some clutter and enjoyed just watching the grass grow.  Literally, take a look at my Hoya.

My Hoya is my favorite plant.  As long as I can remember, my Aunt Dorothy's Hoya has taken center stage hanging from the ceiling in her breakfast room.  The long graceful tendrils hang down and almost kiss the window sill.  The Hoya has been there for  birthdays, parties, weddings, and numerous special occasions.  I was so touched several Thanksgivings ago when Dorothy gave me my very own Hoya, which started as cutting from hers and her Hoya was started from a cutting from her Grandmother.

Much to Aunt Dorothy's dismay, I didn't appreciate the history of the Tower of London in my jaded youth, but she is proud that I now "stand in awe" of my Hoya.  I can't believe my plant came from a plant that is well over 100 years old.

It's quite amazing to see a Hoya bloom.  The flowers look almost artificial, pink waxy-like, star shape flowers form clusters on the vines.
My Hoya was getting a little unruly, so I took some clippings and started another hanging basket at the beginning of the summer.  It's grown like crazy, I was proud of it, I had to give it to my friend Dottie for her birthday yesterday.
Do you have a favorite plant?
