Location:
Worli, Mumbai City
Sea side fort
Things to see:
This fort is located on a landmass that protrudes in the Mahim bay of Mumbai. The fort is very small. It provides views of Bandra and Madh in the North whereas in the south one can see Walkeshwar hill. The eastern view is blocked by tall buildings as the hillock on which is stands is not tall.
Past:
The fort was built by British in the year 1675, about 14 years after the handover of Mumbai by Portuguese to them. Main purpose of the fort was to keep watch on ships especially those of pirates. The city consisted of only seven islands in those times.
Present:
The way to the fort is through slum near the end of Worli Koliwada. Efforts for the conservation of the structure have been done by the government but the fort is still not much noticed by majority of Mumbaikars. The site fails to attract people. There have been complaints of illegal liquor unit being run in the fort premises. The ramparts of the fort are nowadays used for drying clothes by the slum dwellers. The well in the fort is filled with rubbish and muck. The fort is used as gymnasium by the locals sometimes. There is scope to make it a proud heritage site for Mumbai. The fort is visible from the Bandra Worli Sea Link Bridge.
