Located in the foothills on the western side of the Sierra range, Coloma Resort is surrounded on three sides and adjacent to the American River and Sutter's Mill, the site of the initial finding of gold in California in January of 1848. This park is beautifully situated along the American River, which runs year round. Oaks and pines spot the campground, and a large expanse of riverfront spots allow access to the riverbanks. A narrow bridge connects the Marshall Gold Discovery Site State Historic Park, which is run by California's State Park system. The state park is lovely and offers lots to explore about the Native Americans, Chinese, and 49ers who all have lived off of this land.
