History of Mata Lal Devi Temple

Mata Lal Devi temple is pilgrimage for Hindus. It is located at Rani Ka Bagh, Amritsar. Lal Devi born on 21st February 1923 at Kasoor Distt. Lahore (Pakistan). When Lal Devi was around 9 months, her family members along with her visited Chintpurni temple in Himachal Pradesh (India). When family was offering prayer in temple, Lal Devi’s forehead was enlightened with the spirit of Goddess Chintpurni. Hindu priest present there declared that the child is blessed with heavenly powers. After hearing this, family members started to regard Lal Devi as a Mother. The word ‘Mata’ was added before her name by devotee. Hence the name derived Mata Lal Devi. The word ‘Mata’ means Mother.

Her elders stated that when Mata Lal Devi crossed her childhood period, she used to lock herself in a room for meditation. And used to keep herself locked for weeks. She was not fond of food. She used to take only water, fruits and milk to live. People started to come to meet her for the resolution of their difficulties. If any devotee offered eatables to her, it was her will only whether to take that thing or not. Mata Lal Devi did not get marry and meditation was the only diet of her Soul.

After the division of countries in 1947, Lal Devi selected Amritsar city to live. While rest of the family settled in Jalandhar. She resided in Railway Quarters with her Devotee Pindi Das. She was living very simple life and held many ‘Kirtan’ & ‘Jagran’. Many devotees attended her Kirtan & Jagran and took blessings in her presence. In 1953, she moved to Gagar Mal Sarai, place Near Bhandari Bridge (Amritsar). Then the plot was purchased in Model Town with the help of her Devotee and funding. And the building was made where the current temple premises is.

Mata Lal Devi Temple these days

Kirtan and Jagran is still being celebrated every month in the current temple premises. Current temple is known with the name of Lal Bhawan. Temple remains crowded during these celebrations. Many statues established here along with the Mata Lal Devi’s statue in the centre. The replica of ‘Gufa Vaishno Devi’ established in the temple, which is the point of attraction for visitors. Thousands of people visit this temple daily. Free food is served to visitors with the help of temple officials & charity members.
