Madhugiri Fort alias Madhugiri Betta

Madhugiri Fort is located near to Madhugiri city. It is in Tumkur district, Karnataka, India. It is also known as Madhugiri Betta. Betta means fort in the local language, Kannada.

This fort got its name from the hill on which the fort is situated. The hill is known as Madhu-giri. Madhu means honey and giri means hill.

Thesei hills is situated at an average altitude of 787 meters or 2582 feet. The fort has got seven walls. It was built by the Vijayanagar Dynasty rulers. Hyder Ali made some improvisations to the fort.

There is a gateway to the fort at the outskirts of the town. It is not very difficult to trek to the top of the fort from this gateway. It takes around one hour or so to reach the top. There are iron railings at places where it is very steep.

There are many ruined structures inside the fort. The fort is being restored and renovated by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

How do I go to Madhugiri Fort alias Madhugiri Betta?

There are local buses towards Madhugiri. But they are not very frequent. Buses go to the city, which is located to the south of the fort.

Tumkur is the nearest large town at around 46 kilometers distance to the fort. It takes around 45 minutes of travel by car. There also a Railway Station named Tumakuru (Tumkur) there. It is a medium sized station with four platforms.

There are many other small railway stations at around 20 to 25 kilometers distance from the fort. Viduraswattha Railway Station, Gauribidanur Railway Station, Devarapalli Railway Station, Someshwara Railway Station, Thondebhavi Railway Station, Hindupur Railway Station and Kyatsandra Railway Station are to name a few. But none of the express trains stop at any of these stations.

Bangalore is around 105 kilometers distance form Madhugiri.
