1. Ischia Island – Italy

Tired of the same, boring all-inclusive resorts? Instead, consider a seven-day getaway to the picturesque island of Ischia. Located in the gulf of Naples (Italy), this beautiful Mediterranean paradise has gone overlooked thanks to competition from nearby tourist hubs Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii.

As the Ischia Review itself points out, the highlight of the region comes in the form of Castello Aragonese. Built 2,500 years ago as a watchtower to monitor the presence of enemy forces, it now stands as one of the most iconic sites in Naples. Revamped and rebuilt throughout the years, the castle is a must-see for any tourist.

2. Ciudad Perdida – Colombia

An ancient city in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada, Ciudad Perdida (“the lost city”) is believed to have been founded some 650 years earlier than Machu Picchu. Despite being built in the 11th century by the Tayrona, this spot of immense natural architecture wasn’t discovered until the 1970s, according to 1Cover. The remote location of Ciudad Perdida meant it’s been left relatively untouched for the best part of a millennium.

Nobody knows what caused the ancient Peruvians to abandon the city, but their choice to do so has left us with a surprisingly clear glimpse into the past. If you want to check out this spot, make sure you’re in good health. It’s a multi-day journey on foot.

3. Psychedelic Salt Mines – Russia

Have you ever looked inside a kaleidoscope and marvelled at the pretty swirling patterns on view? These unique Russian salt mines mirror those images, with the walls of a 650ft-deep cave covered in hippy-esque livery.

The mines are coloured this way as a result of drying up thousands of years ago – with the mineral deposits left behind causing these utterly unique natural patterns. Unfortunately, these are now only accessible with a government permit. Be sure to apply for one before you travel.

4. Huacachina – Peru

Arguably the most interesting village in the world, Huacachina lies in the middle of a sea of sand dunes, in the Ica District of Peru. With a population of just 100 people, this oasis looks like something out of a fairy-tale. This one is probably the most underrated scenic destinations that we have heard of.

Surrounded by desert, a small lake serves as the core of this utterly unique community. The locals have made the most of their recent surge in popularity, with a series of hotels and pools built to accommodate visitors.
