CDC Announces New Regulations for Bringing Dogs into the United States

There are new entry requirements for pets to enter the Untied States beginning August 1st, 2024

Are you planning on chartering a private flight with your dogs to or from the United States? If so, it’s important to note some changes being to the process of bringing your dog into the country.

Beginning August 1, 2024, dogs entering or re-entering the United States must comply with new regulations. This includes dogs traveling on pet-friendly charter flights heading to the U.S.

These requirements vary based on the countries they have visited in the past six months and the locations where they received their rabies vaccinations, if such vaccinations are necessary.

Visit the CDC Website for more information: https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/dogs-entering-us-after-august-1.html

  • They must be at least 6 months old at the time of entry, have an ISO-compatible microchip implanted before any required rabies vaccination, and have the microchip number documented on all necessary forms and veterinary records.
  • The dogs must appear healthy upon arrival and must not be carrying any disease contagious to humans.

If a dog does not appear healthy, isolation, a veterinary examination, and additional testing at the importer’s expense may be required to determine and prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
  • Dogs must have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, which should ideally be filled out online 2-10 days before arrival but can also be completed right before travel if internet access is available.

If any information on the form changes before the dog’s arrival, a new form must be submitted, indicating the changes to the existing form. All information, including the port of entry, must be accurate at the time of arrival.

The form requires a clear photograph of the dog showing its face and body, and for dogs less than one year old at arrival, the photo should be taken within 10 days before arrival. There is no charge for submitting this form.
  • Dogs must have documentation based on where they have been during the six months prior to entering or returning to the U.S. or if they have a current rabies vaccination administered in the U.S.

There are specific requirements for dogs with a current U.S.-administered rabies vaccination, for dogs that have been in high-risk countries for dog rabies without appropriate documentation of a current U.S.-issued rabies vaccine, and for dogs that have only been in rabies-free or low-risk countries in the six months before entry. See the links below for more details.
