In June 2021 we went to Wales for a staycation. We had previously visited the north of Wales so this time we decided to try somewhere different and to visit the West Coast.
We stayed in a charming cottage which we booked on Air BNB near Lampeter. The cottage was called Babbling Brook and it was situated on the hosts farm land. The cottage was literally perfect, it had everything that we needed and was so cosy and homely and the host was lovely and so accommodating. There were also some public footpaths around the cottage so it was great to be able to get out and go for a nice walk and explore the area and was also perfect for us for walking our dog Lottie! What is there to do on Barry Island?
On our first day in Wales we decided to take a bit of a detour and visit Barry Island before we headed to our Air BNB in Lampeter. As huge Gavin and Stacey fans, Barry Island is somewhere we’ve been wanting to go for a long time and I would say that Barry is definitely a tourist location now because of it!
There are lots of Gavin and Stacey tourist spots to see and there are official Gavin and Stacey bus tours!
We decided not to do this, instead opting to have a wander around ourselves checking out spots such as the promenade and Marco’s Cafe (If you’re not a Gavin and Stacey fan then sorry, this probably won’t mean much to you!)
We had a lovely walk to the beach before heading on our journey to our cottage in Lampeter where we would be staying for the rest of the week.
Where can I see dolphins in Wales?
On our 2nd day in Wales we went on a dolphin watching boat Trip which left from a seaside town in Ceredigion called New Quay. This was by far our favourite thing that we did on this trip to Wales! We pre-booked this boat trip using a virgin experience voucher. The boat trip lasted around 90 minutes and we were lucky enough to see a few dolphins which was amazing. The boat trip took us along the coast passing Birds Rock, The Caves, Cwmtydu and Seals Bay. We saw some of the many seabirds that nest and feed from the cliffs as well as the Bottlenose Dolphins. The weather was great on this day too which made it even better.
How hard is the four waterfalls walk?
On our third day in Wales, we travelled to the Brecon Beacons and did the four waterfalls walking trail. The walk took us around 2 – 2.5 hours and is around 7/8km. The four waterfalls trail is a circular walk through ‘Waterfall Country’ in the Brecon Beacons and visits four stunning falls set in beautiful woodlands – Sgwd Uchaf Clun Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun Gwyn, and Sgwd yr Eira. If you are looking to do a walk in the Brecon Beacons then we’d recommend this trail, the waterfalls are beautiful. There are some steep descents and accents and it is muddy and slippery around the river banks so proper boots are a must – it’s a moderately difficult walk.
On our 4th and final full day in the west of Wales we travelled to Aberdovey (Aberdyfi). Aberdovey is a small peaceful seaside village nestling on the north side of the Dyfi estuary.
Before stopping in Aberdovey, we decided to take a steam train ride on the Talyllyn Railway! The railway starts on the coast at Tywyn, snakes through the foothills of Cader Idris to Dolgoch Falls, Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol. The trip takes about an hour each way but you are able to get off and explore some of the stops if you wish. We really enjoyed the journey and the stunning views of the valleys!
We loved our trip to the west coast of Wales and look forward to exploring more areas of Wales in the future!
