Krakow and Zakopane are only about 100 km apart. If you’re spending most of your time in the mountains, why not plan a day trip to Krakow? Krakow’s Old Town
A good way to start your Krakow Sightseeing is to follow the Royal Route through town. This is the path that has taken in the past by processions leading to and from St. Florian’s Church, through the Old Town all the way to Wawel Castle. Just about thirty minutes will take you from one end to the other.
Your walk will take you past the Barbican and the Florianska Gate, two spectacular leftovers from the walls that surrounded the city in the middle Ages. Then you’ve start down Florianska Street and walk towards the shadow of St. Mary’s Church, in which you will find one of the masterpieces of Gothic art in Europe – the famous altar by Wit Stwosz. Leaving St. Mary’s, you’ll walk right into the Sukiennice and the entrance to the Underground Museum, which is one of the most fascinating historical exhibits in the country. Inside, you’ll find a modern, multimedia presentation of life in Krakow during the middle Ages. The Royal Route goes further along Grodzka Street, where you can see both the Dominican and Franciscan churches and the Papal Window. You’ll also pass the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul and Romanesque Church of St. Andrew.
Wawel Hill
The Royal Route ends at the most famous site in the country, Wawel Hill. A visit to Wawel Cathedral is an incredible experience. Sigismund’s Chapel and the Royal tombs are just the beginning of your adventure. Stare in awe at the work of gifted hands that adorns every wall and even the ceiling before climbing up to the top of the bell tower for a panoramic view of the city. When you’re done, take a walk through the arcaded courtyard behind the Cathedral.
Krakow sightseeing – Kazimierz district
When it’s time for a change of scenery, walk just ten minutes away from Wawel to enter the old Jewish Quarter of Kazimierz. It’s hard to imagine any trip to Krakow without a visit to this neighborhood. Its unique character was shaped for five centuries by the Jewish community of Krakow but some of its most interesting sites are Christian churches – the Skalka Sanctuary and the Gothic churches of St. Catherine and Corpus Christi. Seven synagogues are also waiting to be discovered in Kazimierz as well. Szeroka Street alone is home to four of them, including the Old Synagogue and the Remuh Synagogue.
You can easily take in the sights listed here in a day with plenty of time left for the trip back to Zakopane. Don’t forget there are any number of bars and restaurants along the way, offering everything a hungry or thirsty visitor might want, including something to go for the trip back to the Tatra mountains!
