The busted tower of Weesp

Weesp is a small city, about 15 minutes away from Amsterdam by trein. In the past few years, it’s grown quite a bit, but its historic city center is still quite well maintained, and you can get a good idea of what old Dutch Towns looked like in the past. Like all Dutch towns, it has a myriad of churches, but its most notable was the Laurentiuschurch, on the side of the canal. Every picture of the city featured it. Until November, 2016.

The church itself had been long out of service, but they were planning to refurbish it into a culture centre for the residents. Unfortunately, a power generator inside the Tower caught fire, and the spire collapsed. They were quick to put on a ceiling, but ever since the tower has stood a bit sad without much happening. As it turns out, the will and money to get it back to its original state are there, only some neighbours complained about the noise.

The latest news is that the complaints have been taken care of, and construction is soon to begin. In the summer, I will revisit this post to see how the restoration process has been going.
