QUIT SMOKING WITH THIS TOBACCO HELPLINE

31st May is observed as World No Tobacco Day every year and this year, let’s talk about what you can do to quit tobacco once and for all. We’ve all thought about quitting, but it is always “Kal se band” while you smoke the nth cigarette of the day.

Last year, the Union Health Ministry launched a toll free tele-counselling facility called ‘QuitLine’. It was just a pilot initiative with English and Hindi languages that ran from 8am to 8pm where they provided counselling to people who were keen on quitting this habit.

Interestingly, data revealed that phone counseling had more success than face-to-face counselling, which was about a 40% success rate of all the people calling in.

A number of people have been calling in and the plan is to expand QuitLine by introducing other languages as well. They even plan to check on the quitters to identify relapses and find reasons and help them back on track.

The first step is to be motivated and care enough about your health and of those around you to want to kick this habit for good. This World No Tobacco, make a change, choose to lead a healthy life. And don’t hesitate to seek help.

If you’re a non-smoker, motivate and help your family or friends to quit. Share the helpline details with them and encourage them to at least give it a try – counselling, patches or chewing gums – it all starts with a try.
