Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day celebrated on 28^th May. The idea is to break the taboos and stress upon and spread the word about how important menstrual hygiene is for women and adolescent girls across the globe.

With the various crazy and illogical taboos surrounding menstruation in India – little girls are hardly ever educated about menstrual hygiene, menstrual problems, PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) or even the different menstrual products available!

There’s just too much focus on all the wrong things – like not touching the pickle because it will go bad (RIP Science??!!), the embarrassment in buying pads and getting it home in black poly bags (because omg they are like bombs?!), not entering the kitchen or temple because having your chums makes you impure (cannot even…!!?)!

There are so many changes that a young girl’s body goes through during adolescence and imposing such ridiculous taboos on them just makes everything more and more confusing for them which leads them to believe that it is not even a matter that is open to discussion, everything has to be all hushed up!

The Period Party is a great initiative to address menstruation and normalize it so we can all stop talking about it in code! The party is not just for girls/women…. It is for everyone! The party will include a musical performance by Project Yugm and poems by The Poetry Recitals! Sanitary napkin dispensers have already been installed in a few cafes across the city already – like Kaleidoscope, Nibs and Home Café by Mr. Beans!
