Don’t Miss These Best Places to Visit in Kandy

Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or culture, the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka has something for everyone and here are some of its key attractions to add to your itinerary.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Located in the heart of Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the most revered places for Buddhists around the world. It’s believed to house a tooth of Lord Buddha, which is kept in a gold casket. The temple, which is within easy reach of properties like Earl’s Regency is beautifully decorated with intricate carvings and paintings, and within the complex, one will find various shrines, museums, and the Royal Palace. It’s also the focal point of the annual Kandy Esala Perahera held in July / August.

Udawattakele Sanctuary

Near the above-mentioned temple, you will find the Udawattakele Sanctuary, a forest reserve that’s a must-visit for nature lovers based at nearby places to stay in Kandy. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet away from the bustling city, then this is the perfect place for you; there are several paths for trekking and as you wander amidst the trees, you may spot monkeys, deer, Asian palm civets and many bird species.

Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya

Once used by royalty, the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya is the largest of its kind on the island; it’s home to a wide variety of floral blooms, trees, and plant species, including a stunning collection of orchids. Amongst the highlights here are the Avenue of Royal Palms, Burma bamboo and the huge Javan fig tree, while the Flower Garden, Spice Garden and the suspension bridge are popular too.

You can also visit the Kandy Cultural Centre to witness traditional dance and music performances or take a walk around the city’s artificial lake. And, of course, don’t forget to try some delicious Sri Lankan food, like rice and curry or kottu roti.
