Orchard Road was named after the mélange of spice gardens, nutmeg farms, and fruit orchards that draped the region since the 1830s. Nowadays, it has become an exciting destination to explore during one’s stay at one of the Orchard Road hotels.

Flooding

Orchard Road was susceptible to flooding since it is nestled in a depression and this was a huge problem until the 1960s when it received an effective drainage system. In 2010, the road was raised a bit as an additional measure.

Bombings

Almost every glitzy locale would hide that tiny piece of history they aren’t quite proud of. Orchard Road witnessed the infamous MacDonald House bombing during the Konfrontasi.

A Forgotten Place

If you head down to Orchard Point, which is located quite close to a hotel like Grand Park Orchard, you’ll see the site that occupied the Orchard Road Market. It was opened in 1891 and was extremely popular for its fresh produce.

Fitzpatrick’s Supermarket

The present-day Paragon was once the location of Fitzpatrick’s Supermarket. During the 1974 FIFA World Cup finals, football fans camped at the car park here as the match was screened in colour.
