Apart from Janger and Baron dances, Kecak Dance is a must-see performance during a vacation spent at a luxury resort Bali has to offer such as Nirjhara.

Overview

The origins of Kecak Dance can be linked to the epic of Ramayana. The dancers represent characters from the epic such as Rama, Sita, Ravana, and even Hanuman the Monkey God.

Origin

It is believed that Kecak Dance was originated from an ancient ritual in Bali called Sanghyang, which was held to eliminate and repel dark forces and evil spirits. The dance was first performed in 1930 when Wayan Limbak, a Balinese dancer, joined hands with a German painter by the name of Walter Spies to create an alluring performance version of the Sanghyang incorporating the epic Ramayana.

Performance

Unlike with other performances, the traditional orchestra is not used for Kecak dance. It is only accompanied by a continuous chanting of “Cak! Cak! Cak!” by a group of men for the whole performance.

Where to See

The Kecak Dance can be enjoyed at many places throughout Bali, but the place is considered as Pura Uluwatu where a daily session is held with the spectacular sunset as its backdrop.
