About
‘Esala’ also known as the month of August marks the beginning of the raining season. Initially, this pageant was held to celebrate Devas’ victory over the Asuras. With the passage of time, it was organized to venerate the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. The city of Kandy enchants the visitors who mill around the streets to view this eye-catching ceremony.
Festive atmosphere
The thrashing of whips indicates the commencement of the Perahera. Moreover, the rhythmical throb of drums, stunning performances of Kandyan dancers and beautifully dressed-up elephants will take you to a real-life wonderland. Numerous torchbearers on either side of the streets are a significant highlight which adds colour and light to this fascinating pageant.

The two phases
