Fun Facts about Koh Samui – Trivia for the Soul

Koh Samui is on the minds of so many planning their epic Thai escape, but apart from where to stay and what to do, read on to learn some fun facts about this glittering Thai gem.

Name and Size

The actual name of the Island is simply “Samui” amongst locals. The word “Koh” means island so while the island is Koh Samui to tourists, Samui would do just fine as well. It is the second-largest of the Thai islands, second to Phuket, and has a population of around 63,000 people, making it quite a populous isle.

Heart of the Island

The undisputed heart of the island is Chaweng, with its beautiful beach along with the best bars, restaurants! Making this the perfect place for you to base yourself. While Chaweng Beach Resorts are aplenty, hotels such as Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort are perfect for those who want to stay in the thick of the action but also the lap of luxury!

Remote National Parks

Koh Samui’s location is enviable, to say the least, as it’s a mere 40 kilometres away from one of Thailand’s most precious tropical gems, which is the Ang Thong Marine National Park. A perfect day trip from the main island, tourists can go snorkelling and revel in the natural beauty of these 42 protected islands.

Monsoons Showers

While Koh Samui is considered to be a “year-round” destination, Thailand does experience monsoon rains and this is something to be mindful of when planning your holiday. While there are thundershowers from October to December, these are punctuated with bouts of sunshine. The best time to visit would be from January to April when the weather is dryer.
