Explore Galle Fort in a Day

Although the Portuguese must be given the right of first thinking of a concept of a Fort at this location, the initial fortifications built by them aren’t what you can see today. They were quite simple at first, and the Dutch made extensive modifications to them, which made it become one of the most archaeologically and historically fascinating monuments in Sri Lanka.

Significance

Galle Fort, which is located within easy access from some of the best beach hotels in Galle, has been recognised by UNESCO as the epitome of the European and South Asian architectural blend during the 16th to 19th centuries. History Buffs residing at properties such as Fortress Resort and Spa will have a great time at this captivating location.

British Influences

The British allocated Galle Fort as their Southern headquarters and built a lighthouse at the bastion Utrecht They also added a gate that you can see today between Sun and Moon bastions and carried out several other minor changes as well.

Main Entrance

The main entrance to Galle Fort can be found on its Northern side. The Moat at its entrance was widened during the Dutch occupation by breaking the first fort walls built by the Portuguese. This moat could only be crossed with the help of a drawbridge during those days.

The Present City

The present city is located in the same historic location thriving with a multi-ethnic community. The town, many of its buildings, and the roads were constructed during the Dutch era.
