The Maldivian Traditional Boats

The Maldivian Tourism Promotion Bureau has come up with several symbols to represent the true Maldivian vibe so far. Out of all of them, Dhoni- the traditional boat of the Maldives still remains iconic!

Dhonis are everywhere

No matter where you go during your stay at your Maldives beach resort the likes of The Residence Maldives Dhigurah, you are sure to come across sights of several dhonis. They are used for fishing and even for transporting people between islands.

How do they make it?

Building dhonis is knowledge and skills passed down from generation to generation. These boats are made of coconut wood which can be easily found in tropical island destinations such as the Maldives.

Their appearance

Generally, their sizes range from 14ft to 100ft. Sometimes, you even find bigger ones done by special manufacturers. The speed, colour, and shape normally change through time, and you find different types of dhonis today.

They are stronger than you think

Don’t underestimate the strength of dhonis just because of the fact that they are locally made. They have survived through storms and thus, have proven their reliability over the years.
