Top Maldivian Dishes for Foodies to Try

If you love to try new cuisine when on holiday, then the below dishes in Maldives are not to be missed and are bound to become amongst your new favourites.

Curries

The locals love their curries, generally made with coconut milk and various spices. Tuna Curry (kandu kukulhu riha) is a delectable delight, while resorts like Milaidhoo Island Maldives offer other options too; these include chicken curry (kukulhu riha), lamb curry from the northern archipelago (uthuru bakarimas riha) and lobster curry (dhivehi ihi riha).

Garudhiya

When it comes to cuisine in the Maldives, restaurants on local islands as well as private resorts serve a light and fresh-tasting soup known as garudhiya, generally eaten with rice. Fresh skipjack tuna is ideally used to make this dish into which ingredients like curry and pandan leaves, chilli, garlic and onion are added.

Mas Huni

To experience a typical Maldivian breakfast, Mas Huni is a must! The star of this dish is shredded tuna that is combined with grated coconut, chilli, onion and some lime. Relatively simple to make, mas huni is often enjoyed with roshi, a type of chapati bread and served with hot tea for a truly satisfying morning meal.

Gabulhi Boakibaa

Gabulhi boakibaa, a type of local coconut cake, is perfect for those looking to enjoy dining in Maldives as well as satisfy any sweet craving! The key ingredient is grated tender / young coconut which gives the cake a distinctive taste; to make this dish, rose or jasmine water is also added to help create a truly divine dessert.
