The history of the Maldives is quite a colourful one with many fantastical stories to explore. One of the most popular of such stories is involves the exploits of national hero Mohamed Thakurufaanu.
Background
Sometime during the mid-1500s, the Portuguese established a small garrison in the Maldives, and Andiri Andiri, a regent of King Dom Manuel, managed to occupy certain islands by force. During this time, it is believed that the sea grew red with Maldivian blood.
Enter Mohamed Thakurufaanu
Mohamed and his two brothers left to the island of Maliku, just off the coast to India, and set about building a massive ship with the help of some allies. This ship was named, Kalhuoffummi, and they used this in many guerrilla-style attacks to drive away the Portuguese invaders after an eight-year-long war.
Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu
Following his defeat of the Portuguese, Mohamed Thakurufaanu became the Sultan of the Maldives and is believed to have ruled wisely and justly, being considered a champion of the people.
