New Wave Cinema at the Tamarindo Surf Film Festival

This weekend, the 2nd annual Tamarindo Surf Film Festival kicks off, bringing together lovers of surf and cinema in what promises to be a new wave spectacular for Costa Rica! After the success of the 2019 festival, the organisers are excited to return to the city to connect a diverse community of film-lovers while honoring the creativity of great artists and filmmakers.

For anyone who loves great weather, good food, music, and cinema, there’s plenty to do at the festival, and a host of activities are planned to ensure the celebrations last all weekend.

Who’s Going to be There?

Jerry Hirsch, a long-time resident of Playa Tamarindo and a surfer/longboarder since 1960, is one of the organizers of the event, collaborating with Multicines Costa Rica and Robert August Surf & Turf to make it happen. “Our mission is to energize the multicultural surf community in Costa Rica through the magic of cinema and to celebrate the artists and filmmakers who take us there,” explained Hirsch, who has modeled the event after the Florida Surf Film Festival, as well as for the benefit of CEPIA.

When and Where is the Event?

The International Tamarindo Surf Film Festival will be held on the evenings of March 13th and 14th, 2020, at the Multicines movie theater. On Friday, March 13th, Registration for Surf n’ Tickets will be sold in the following locations:

  • Multicines Tamarindo and Liberia
  • Surfbox Playa Flamingo
  • CEPIA Huacas
  • The Bookstore of the Waves Tamarindo.

Ticket prices for the Tamarindo International Film Festival are:

  • Friday $15,
  • Saturday $15
  • $25 for both nights

The night event tickets will be $20. Tickets can also be purchased for the night of the event at Multicines Tamarindo.

What is there to do at the event?

Loads of surf films, a food court, music, raffles, a silent auction, and an awards ceremony with Robert August Surf & Turf—with all the proceeds going towards CEPIA! CEPIA, which stands for Culture, Education, and Psychology for Infants and Adolescents, is a nationally accredited non-profit organization that seeks to promote culture, health, sports and education for children and teenagers and their families from poor backgrounds in the communities of Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

The weekend features back-to-back golf tournaments @ Hacienda Pinilla: first from 7 am-8 am, then from 8 am – 1 pm, surf films screening from 5-10 pm, and a Festival Party at 10:45 pm. On Saturday, March 14th, the day kicks off with a surf competition at 6 am, after which the red carpet begins at 5pm and movies begin screening at 6pm till 10pm, with a brief intermission at around 8pm.

Iconic surfer Damien Hobgood is also visiting the Tamarindo Surf film festival next week! Catch his movie on Friday March 13th and participate in the Q&A afterwards. On Saturday night, you can also catch special guest Chris Bertish of the movie Ocean Driven, which is produced and co-directed by Beach society member Nadia Tarlow Borysenko.

What types of films can I expect to see?

There’ll be many great films showing this year. For example, The Cult of Freedom: The Taj Part by Joe G shows the solo adventure of a surfer chasing a swell on a spontaneous whim. Aloha: Brother by Sam Sykes, an introspective surf movie with some of Hawaii’s most inspiring wave-riders. Kook Paradise by Danny DiMauro and Tin Ojeda shows a short parody film about “kooks”, or clumsy surfers who are just starting out.

For more information about the festival, check out the website Registration for the Robert August Surf & Turf is $160 for the golf portion and $50 for the surfing only. Or purchase an overall package for $250 and participate in golf and surfing, receive a goodie bag, and entrances to the film festival on both nights.
