While Tamarindo is no stranger to villas, the one known as Villa Mariposa remains one of the most well-maintained, close-knit mini-communities in town.

For the month of July, the fifth villa of the bunch is wide open for your summer travel plans. Chances are good, however, that Villa Mariposa #5 will not remain unbooked.

Julys in Tamarindo tend to be busier months, mostly because of summer travelers from North America. It’s not so loco as December or Holy Week, not even close, but places like this tend to fill up pretty quickly.

Here’s why…

Villas in Tamarindo

Around town, there are seven small villas, where townhouses or small homes make up a mini-community of sorts. Some of them are modest, like Villa Mariposa, but some are almost like villages of their own, places like Pueblo del Mar. 

Travelers and locals like staying in these places as there is a feeling of just-add-water community. Most of them have 24-hour security, and because of their small sizes, anyone who doesn’t belong stands out pretty fast.

This makes it a little easier to relax, but also way easier to meet other travelers. It’s hard to ignore someone relaxing in the same pool who just came out of the villa next to yours. You feel like neighbors, even if only temporarily.

Why this is any different than a hotel is beyond this writer, but there is something more intimate about villas. Maybe it’s the lack of bad room service, and stinky hotel rooms, I dunno.

Anyway, Villa Mariposa is tops in this arena.

Villas Mariposa

There is only one gate into Villa Mariposa. It faces away from the ocean, but it’s not far from said-ocean.

You can walk to the beach and town in about ten minutes from Mariposa. Lollygaggers will take longer, stopping at La Bodega cafe for coffee, and Falafel Bar for some Baklava.

You should know that there is plenty of distraction on your way to the beach, an old-school gym that offers classes, yoga studios, several small grocers, tons of restaurants, and clothing shops.

The first day you head to the beach you may never actually make it there, not because it’s far, but because of all the distractions. That’s assuming you get past the pool in the middle of Mariposa.

The architects of the property arranged the villas around a central pool, which has a circular drive wrapped around it. It’s like a secured-entry cul-de-sac or rotunda as the local call it.

Each house in Villa Mariposa is uniquely painted, trimmed, and landscaped, giving the overall feeling of the property a Caribbean whimsy.

Unit #5

Of the total of ten units, number five is smack dab in the middle of the rotunda. The interior is covered in ceramic tile, detailed with wood elements, and a vaulted wood ceiling.

There are two bedrooms, one master with a queen, and another with three twin-sized beds. You can sleep up to five, but two of the twin beds are bunk beds so plan accordingly. Less adventurous adults don’t prefer to sleep on bunks.

Unit 5 has everything you need to whip up local cuisine, make coffee, and do some laundry if needed.

As I’m fond of pointing out, this makes packing light more feasible. Bring less, travel lean, and if you need more clothes, buy something local to take home as a souvenir.

This unit has wifi and a television if you prefer traditional forms of entertainment. It also comes with off-street parking, making it a gem among gems for villas.

Last but not least, there are two bathrooms. This is mission critical when sharing a space with more than one other person, especially when traveling.
