SUSHI WITH A TWIST

I’ve been craving for Sushi for quite some time now. I guess it runs in our blood since my mother was asking me non-stop two days ago when and where to eat something Japanese, but with a twist.

I was searching for a restaurant in Alabang, and Sushi Ninja was the first one I saw at the recommendations list. Unlike the usual sushi place, Sushi Ninja adds a modern twist to the classic sushi we all know and love.

The place was a bit cramped, even though it was past 1 PM already. There was a happy chatter in the air: families having their late lunch, employees exceeding their one hour break for lunch. The ambience was simple and minimalist: two things that I love in a place. I was not able to take a photo of the place because it was full of people and they might get upset if I took a photo with them in the background (haha).

Since most of the tables inside was already occupied, my mother and I had to stay at the corner, where two seats and a small table was waiting for us.

Despite the fact that I was starving, we took our sweet time to choose what we want to try (since it was our first time at Sushi Ninja). Just looking at the other tables, I know that each dish is delicious. The menu was very different from the usual Japanese restaurant that we have tried that’s why it took us half of forever to order. After debating with my mother, we finally ordered.

Wakame salad (PHP 150)

The wakame is thinly sliced, topped with sesame seeds and ebiko (shrimp eggs). This salad is different from what my mom prepares. The seaweed is in its usual form (little square ones).

Ebi tempura (PHP 280 for 3 pieces)

The ebi (shrimp) is large enough, so the price is fairly justified.

Ikebukuro Maki (PHP 395 for 8 pieces)

Since I haven’t tried unagi before, we chose Ikebukuro Maki. Ikebukuro Maki consists of unagi (eel), kani (crab), tamago (egg) and Cream Cheese, rolled in sesame seeds and drizzled with their special sauce.

Okinawa-toshi (PHP 360 for 4 pieces)

It was my first time to try toshi or fried sushi balls. We had the Okinawa-toshi which consists of the fried sushi, topped with Cream Cheese Wrapped in salmon, drizzled with truffle oil and ebiko. The topping (cream cheese wrapped in salmon) was my favorite part. The whole thing just melts in your mouth.

It might not seem much, but it’s enough for two persons. At first I thought it wasn’t enough for the two of us but we were quite shocked with the size of the serving. It was enough to fill our stomachs and satisfy our craving.

If you’re craving for the classics with a modern twist, Sushi Ninja is a must try.
