Putnam Heights Kitchen Refresh

Putnam Heights is exactly the kind of area which comes to mind when thinking of quentiscential “America”. Remember the movie Dennis the Menace? Remember the gorgeous tree lined streets and  beautiful turn of the century bungalow homes? Well, that is exactly what this little nook of Oklahoma City is like.

So when I was asked to help give a kitchen in the neighborhood a quick refresh, I couldn’t say no.

For this client, the kitchen is the epicenter of her home. It gets the most traffic, often hosting dinner parties, impromptu cocktail hours. Feeling it was time to give her space a facelift prior to a birthday party/reunion and out of town visitors, we jumped into work mode to give this space a quick makeover.

The owner is an avid art collector, lover of bright hues and a lover of cooking and cocktail concocting. (You should see her insane collection of new and vintage recipe books and cooking utensils. Very jealous!)

Here are a few of the “before” shots.

And now for the shots you’ve been waiting for… The “After”.

The first step was to change out the electrical and give the whole space a bright wash of white paint. It was already a shade of white, but as with most walls, they tend to dull over time. So a fresh coat of paint was the first step on the “to do” list. Both the walls and the cabinets were painted a bright white.

The previous light fixture was courtesy of the previous owner. It wasn’t awful but it wasn’t the sleek/classic look the owner wanted. (It was a flush mounted frosted number with shiny brass trim.) We opted to replace it with a more contemporary pendant light in Brushed Brass.

Side note: When replacing any electrical in an older home, be prepared to call in an electrician. While switching out fixtures is usually a pretty run of the mill electrical feat, this job proved to be pretty hairy.

The cabinet spaces were completely cleared away to showcase the essentials the homeowner uses on a daily basis. All other items were tucked away neatly in the freshly painted cabinets. Going through this exercise also helped to “edit” the pieces that she owned multiples of, or the things that she didn’t use any longer.

Not shown in these photos is the beautiful garden that has been cultivated by her and her mother outside. We brought some of the garden inside by potting some of her fresh rosemary in repurposed orchid containers from Whole Foods.

Feng Shui Principle: Showcasing multiples of items like groups of water bottles shown here or bowls of fresh fruit, promotes the idea of abundance and wealth.

One of my favorite parts of this quick refresh is the rug! A steal from Rugs USA, this runner perfectly accents the pops of orange in the dish towels as well as the other rooms in the rest of the home. Plus the addition of pink adds a hint of girlyness that totally reflects the homeowner. If only you could see her closet. Swoon….

Cabinet hardware was switched out with these gorgeous brushed brass pulls from CB2. We were very careful to match the metal type with the hardware of the lighting. Other metals such as the sink and faucets will be replaced in the future to match the pulls, and further streamline the space.

And now for my favorite part. The Before and After Montage. Enjoy!
