Living Room Update: How to Apply Wallpaper

Remember the kitchen makeover? My favorite part (aside from the marble counter tops) HAS to be the Dorothy Draper wallpaper. Uhhhg. It’s just my absolute favorite. You just can’t go wrong with palm fronds. You just can’t. It’s a fact. Side note: Someone please buy me these.

With the living room makeover in full swing, I wanted to keep in mind the idea of consistency. And bringing similar textures/patterns throughout my home. So I decided to apply the same wallpaper from the kitchen makeover in the living room. But in a smaller way.

I wanted the print to seem less obvious in this space. The couch will be green and I’d like for that to be the focal point. Not the wallpaper. So I decided to place it inside this little built in bookshelf.

Step 1: First I measured the areas inside the bookshelf where the wallpaper would be applied. I was careful to measure each and every side. My house is soooooooo old, that it’s pretty normal for angles to not be square.

Then I gathered my supplies. Wallpaper paste, a pencil for marking measurements, scissors and a measuring tape.

Step 2: I unrolled my wallpaper and laid it flat with the print side down. Using only the height measurements, I marked off three consecutive pieces. Then, using a regular pair of scissors, I just cut the paper, much like how wrapping paper is cut.

Maddie Moo Squeeky thought it was the perfect napping spot.

After the three pieces were cut, I laid them out in the order they would be applied from top to bottom. However, they were far too short width wise to span the entire width of the bookshelf. Wallpaper only comes in a few lengths and my bookshelf would for sure take at least two sheets across.

If you’ve ever purchased wallpaper or fabric, I’m sure you’ve heard of something called a “repeat”. Basically, a repeat is how often a pattern repeats or starts over on a particular piece. So when adding the second sheet to the first sheets I had cut out, I needed to find the repeat before cutting. (see below)

Once I matched up the paper on the repeat, I was able to cut out three additional pieces that would complete the full width I needed for each shelf.

Once all pieces were cut out, I could begin applying the paper to the back of the shelves. (Which is the easiest part by the way.) Just slap a little wallpaper glue on the back and smooth it down.

Bada-bing-bada-boom. You’ve got wallpaper kids!
