Belle Isle Big Reveal + A big Announcement!

Welcome to my most favorite project EVER. Remember the Belle Isle Makeover?

Just to jog your memory, see here and here.

This room was a “catchall” for anything kid related. From Barbie houses and books to drawing tables and outdated sofas, this room was in serious need of attention.

See? Told ya. With mis-matched chairs, three different wall colors and lottttttts of toys, this room makeover was long overdue.

Together with the client, we worked to create a space that took into account:

  1. Functionality: aka how the room is most often used. Originally it was as a game/play room, but the client also wanted a formal dining area too. Quite the challenge!
  2. Colors: Colors in this room were important because this room is the largest in the home. To bring it all together and make it feel cohesive AND still make it two distinct spaces, meant that the use of color was going to be super important.

The Process:

The first steps were to meet with the client and develop a game plan.

  1. During the first meeting, we did a walk through of the space and determined what they liked about the room, what they didn’t like, and a few elements they would love to see incorporated.
  2. Next, I created a mood board that incorporated a few of the key pieces + all the colors and textures we hoped to pull in to the design.

3. Once the initial board was approved, I put together a shopping list of items needed for the room.

(I work with clients in several ways. One way, I provide the client with the shopping list and links for them to shop the look themselves at their own pace. For this space, I shopped and coordinated all the installation and shopping.)

4. After the shopping list was approved, the fun part began. Pieces were ordered from various vendors (see below), artwork was sent to the framers and so on. Then the hard work began.

Carpet was ripped out which exposed the concrete flooring. Custom built in bookshelves were constructed and installed and then everything was given a fresh coat of paint. Including the floors. (Gasp! I know. So daring.)

One of my favorite pieces in the space is this John James Audubon print. We ordered a print that had been printed on canvas to give this piece of art a “real painting” feel. The canvas was stretched over at Pirate Alley here in OKC and a brass frame was used to tie it together with the other fixtures and hardware in the room.

Another favorite area of the room are the shelves. Not only are they gorgeous, but I love the antique books that were incorporated. (See my post on where the books were sourced from here. It looks collected rather than purchased all at once. This was key in creating a space that looked like it belonged as opposed to out of place.

Since this room would be a gaming room AND a formal dining, making room for a TV was super important. Shelves were built with this in mind. Bookshelves frame either side of the TV.

We also decided to have the bookshelves run completely to the top of the ceiling and trim them with moulding. They feel like a part of the room and almost like furniture.

It brightens up the room making it seem even larger. Using every bit of space. (One of my biggest pet peeves is when cabinets or bookshelves just stop about a foot or so before the ceiling. Like, WHY? WHY???? Seriously. Why? Just keep going man.

Small accents and found treasures were incorporated into styling on each shelf. One of the children in the home at the time was obsessed with Europe. So books on Europe, map making and travel were carefully placed and given prominence.

The positioning of the sofa was a great way to draw lines between the two areas. Gaming involves lots of snack eating and drink drinking I’m told. So these small light weight tables were perfect as small tables to keep drinks off the floor (and couch!)

The addition of a small table on the side of the room functions as a sideboard for larger meals and as a decorative place for plants, photos and objects in between. (Don’t you just LOVE these custom les touches pillows? Such a huge fan of this fabric!)

Another common theme pulled through the room was brass. (Another favorite!) From hardware and lighting to cutlery and even the bottoms of the dining chairs, it was all brass all day. Even the framing on the James Audubon buffalo print.

What would a Big Reveal be without a proper before and after collage?

I hope you enjoyed this piece as much as I did working on it. Design has become such a passion of mine. (It always has been really)

So….

(Drum roll please…..)
