Decluttering

Tags: makeup cabinet

Makeup has a way shorter lifetime than we all think. According to WebMD, it’s safe to keep powder based Makeup for about 18 months. Lipsticks and glosses however last only about 6 months.

And frighteningly I’d wager to say that before my makeup Cabinet clean-out, (Yes, I said “cabinet”) I’d had lots of items that were well over that time period.

You know how it goes. You pop into Sephora, grab a lipstick or fun new eye shadow, bring it home, realize you already have it and then instead of returning it, you just stash it away.

Oh. And samples. So many of those. Buckets. Literally.

So on about the 12th time of finding two of the same product, I decided to go through everything in the cabinet to organize and take inventory.

You guys, I was HORRIFIED. So much had to be thrown away. All because I’d had no idea I even owned it. I couldn’t see any of it! It was all hidden away in a cabinet and buried in bins and tubs that I couldn’t really see.

So I decided that I needed to get my sh!t together and finally bite the bullet on a Glambox.

After going through the entire cabinet of makeup, I was able to store just about everything in an entire box. (I have the Glamluxe) I love how it’s clear so that you can see everything inside. No more digging through baskets and bins.

Plus, makeup ain’t cheap. It’s an expensive hobby to have! And all the packaging is (usually) awesome! Why store it all away where it can’t be seen? I think it looks pretty now setting out on my dresser. (Random side note: I always do my makeup on the floor of my bedroom by my dresser where the natural light is the best. Otherwise I end up going into bronzer overload and going out looking like an oompa loompa. It’s true. I have photos.)

The box came with one set of acrylic dividers. You can also buy them separately like I did for the other bins. I use them to section off the different areas of the box so that things are even easier to find.

For example in the top portion, I keep all my “face” makeup.

It’s divided into:

Bronzers/highlighters/blushes

Foundations/concealers/primers

Powders

The second drawer I divide into:

Lip liners and pencils

Lipsticks

Glosses

  1. Lipstick palettes

Then there are the eyeshadows. I ended up taking this divider out. I have too many palettes for the divider to fit. So it’s basically all eye shadows and eye brow stuff.

The bottom portion is all face masks, serums, hair masks, eye creams, eye masks, nail polish etc. etc.

I love how you can see everything you have from every angle. Kind of like the same philosophy as open shelving in my kitchen. Everything is on display. Sort of forces you to edit and be conscious of what you buy and use.
