Living Room Makeover: The Before

Not long ago, I posted about my Dream Living Room in Living Room Dreaming. When I came across Diego Rodrîguez’s stunning green hued space, I went weak in the knees. I don’t know what it is about green.

Ultimately, this room moved me to redecorate my own living area. It needs a makeover so badly. Take a look for yourself:

So many things are going on here. Probably too many to mention. But most of all, it’s seemed to have become a “catchall” for furniture and “things” that aren’t functional and that I don’t truly love. A huge no-no. Why keep anything around that doesn’t either 1.) Serve a purpose or 2.) Look incredibly beautiful to you?

So with this notion in mind, I’m giving the entire space a complete overhaul.

A few things to keep in mind:

1.) Line of sight: This is when one space is totally (or maybe even partially) visible from another space. For example, from my dining room (above) the living room is in the direct line of sight. And likewise, from the dining room, the kitchen is in the direct line of sight.

Why in the ‘F is this important?

Well, let me tell you. Cohesiveness. Continuity. Consistency. Basically, just being well thought out. Think walking into Forever 21 on Black Friday and then right afterwards stepping into Restoration Hardware on a Tuesday morning. It’s jarring. It raises your blood pressure. No bueno.

And seeing as I’ve just remodeled the kitchen, and I love it to pieces, I’m going to stick with something that goes well with it.

2. ) Budget: Because I’m just plain not made of mullah.

3.) Quality: I’m not into the whole college-furniture repurposed thing anymore. Don’t get me wrong. My bed that I’ve had since 2001 is cool AF. But I’m honestly over it. I’m tired of the little wooden planks which hold the mattress up falling off. I still have glow in the dark stickers strategically placed up the posts, because, “Why not?” College is hard. Glow in the dark stars and smiley faces make it less hard. I guess? Yeah, no. I want quality pieces that I don’t need to screw together with tiny hex wrenches that I’ll ultimately lose, and thus never be able to take apart and transport.

So…. Stay tuned for updates to this space and my picks for my own Dream Living Room.
