Living Room Update: The Big Reveal

Today is the day kids. It’s finally here. The big Living rom reveal! It wasn’t long ago that I was dreaming about what I might want this space to look like. So happy now that it’s finally come full circle.

A few of my girlfriends have swung by over the past few days, and the one comment I’ve heard the most, is that it looks like a “grown up” living room. I’m 34 so…. I suppose it’s about time that it looks like an adult lives here.

But I can see why they say it looks like some hard core adulting is happening here now. It’s got the “adult” elements. For one, the Drapes.

But first, before I tell you about the drapes, I have to disclose this…. It pains me to post these photos because the darn curtain rings don’t match the curtain rods. I know, I know. What was I thinking? Well, the REAL curtain rings are on backorder at Crate and Barrel. As soon as they arrive, I’ll be reshooting this space so that you can get the full effect.

Now. Back to the drapes. These aren’t pre-made drapes. These are custom one-of-a-kind, made-to-order, real deal drapes. With pinch pleats. Like, real legit, grown up curtains you guys. The kind that are still hanging in your grandmother’s living room. The kind that you get because:

1.) They are an investment piece.

2.) The drapes from Target aren’t going to fit your windows the way they are supposed to. Especially if you live in an older home like I do. Drapes are meant to filter light, be hung tall and close to your ceiling, and to “poole” on the floor. Think of them like pants. You don’t want them to be like high waters. You want bell bottoms. Out of the box curtains aren’t going to give you that look.

3. Quality. These photos simply do not do these panels justice. They are made up of the most luxurious woven fabric. Soft to the touch, but still thick and sturdy. Not only do they filter out light beautifully, but I’ve also noticed a dramatic difference in the temperature control in this room. My windows are super old. Just as old as the house is. (1920’s!) The window panes are super thin and drafty. When it’s cold outside, it’s cold inside and vice versa. Keeping the temperature at a constant is definitely easier now that these drapes have been installed.

Another “adult” element is the furniture. I’ve long thought that everyone should have at least one or two pieces in their home by this age, that they are truly proud of. I call them the “Hand Me Down” pieces. You know what I’m talking about. The kind of pieces everyone fights over when you die.

I know it’s morbid. But it’s true. My parents have several pieces in their home that they’ve sourced over the years from their travels throughout South East Asia. Everyone knows that when the time comes, I get the antique chicken coupe and chinoiserie tables. And Frankie gets, well… Frankie only cares about working out and guns. So Frankie gets the gun collection.

Case in point, this beautiful (new to me) green sofa and this gorgeous printmaker’s cabinet. They are statement pieces, they weren’t put together with an Allen Wrench, and they will absolutely still be around 100 years from now. These are the pieces that I can see my children fighting over one day.

The sofa was an antique find sourced from a friend. I had it recovered in this emerald green velvet fabric and accented it with two Brunschwig and Fils Les Touches pillows c/o Arianna Belle. (She has beautiful pieces by the way. You have to check her store out.) Both the sofa and the pillows are filled with the softest down. Reclining on this bad boy is like floating on a cloud. Plus, the velvet… Swooooon. It’s seriously the best.

For now, I’ve got two spun fiber chairs holding down the fort to balance the space out. But soon, they will be making their way back to the dining room where they belong. And in their place, will sit two of the most gorgeous Milo Baughman chairs you ever did see. If you’ve noticed the accents of pink so far, that was no accident. The chairs will be upholstered in a complimentary hue. Equal parts girly with a touch of masculine.

Although, I really do love the spun fiber chairs here. I love how they don’t take up too much space. If they were to stay here, I’d definitely be getting cushions for them. (Round, pink and tufted perhaps?)

In the background you can see another one of my favorite areas of the room. The hanging hammock chair.

Purchased on a trip to Mexico, this gem was a nightmare to get back. My suitcase was already packed to the brim. Plus, all the stuff I bought there. I was using a massive beach bag as my “purse”, then I had my laptop, camera and my actual purse and then my carry on duffel bag. Luckily one of my sweet friends carried this baby on for me as his allotted “personal item” since he didn’t have a carry on or murse.

And I’m so glad he did. I had a professional come in and affix the chair to a chain which was hung through a beam in the attic. Being the first one to sit down on it was terrifying. I couldn’t stop thinking about all the crap that had been stuffed in my attic falling down on top of me if the chair fell. Luckily, it didn’t. Whew! And I was able to create an adorable little seating area in this part of the room.

I added this geometric brass table (which matched the coffee table like a dream!) next to it, added a few of my favorite magazines, and one living thing, duh, and voila! Insta reading nook!

I love this table by the way. It’s from ATG Stores and I couldn’t love it in this space more. Not only because it matches the other brass pieces in the room, but because the legs remind me of the spun fiber in the chairs. It’s the transitional piece that brings this little area together with the rest of the room.

The white in the hammock is a nice contrast to the green on the sofa. I’d thought about incorporating green in the form of a pillow here, but in hindsight, I think it would be way too matchy matchy. I think the plant is just the right amount.

Speaking of pillows and contrasting… Love the Arianna Belle pillows against this fabric. Uhhhh. So good.

On the coffee table, I styled it with fresh flowers of course, and a few personal items, plus this gorgeous Creme de la Creme tray from Rosanna. It’s that little bit of pink that I was talking about. Not too much, but just a touch.

I’ll be doing a piece soon on how to style a coffee table. It really comes down to three things.

• Something Personal

• Something tall

• Something quirky

Another favorite area in the room is mantle. I opted to repaint the entire fireplace. Something I’ve gotten mixed reviews about BEFORE I did it. I’ve heard, “don’t do it! It’s original!” and the ever popular, ” you’ll ruin it!”. But that didn’t scare me. Not to sound like a lame-oh, but everybody is doing it these days. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not why I did it. I did it because I didn’t like the color of the brick and because it made the space look dated. Plus, I wanted the space to look more clean and bright. It was super easy, and took no time at all. I literally did it over a weekend. Take a look for yourself at the tutorial here.

Once the walls and fireplace were covered in Bright White, it felt like I had a blank canvas to work with again. No competing with the color of the walls. So I opted for this buffalo print from Art.com It’s meaningful to me. I didn’t grow up in Oklahoma, but when I look at it, it makes me think of this place.

And the most “adult” thing in this room might not even need to be said. But I’ll say it anyways. Paint my friends. Paint. I wanted the pieces in this room to speak for themselves. I wanted them to stand out. So I decided to go with Bright White from Sherwin-Williams.

Side note: Stay tuned for a second reveal coming up in mid October. Remember the Milo chairs? They will be making their grand entrance around that time. And so will the curtain rings which are on backorder thanks to Crate and Barrel.

Here’s a peek at what it all looked like before:

First off, can I get an “Amen” to the fireplace repaint?  It stuck out like a sore thumb. The brown was dragging the whole room down. It needed to be brighter and match the trim. I used Sherwin-Williams Loxon Concrete and Masonry Primer to prime it first. After it dried, I applied their ProClassic Interior Acrylic Latex paint in Extra White. See the full tutorial here.

And what would a “Before and After” be without a montage?
