12 tips to help you build a strong brand identity

Tags: brand

Every business owner has a dream of making his business well known to the public. One way to make your business easily recognizable is through branding. Branding defines what your business stands for and ensures that it leaves a lasting impression on your customers. So, in order to be a well-known and memorable Brand, good branding along with excellent service is important. In this article, we will go through 12 tips that can help you build a strong brand identity for your business.

1. A logo that reflects your brand

Whenever we think of branding, the first thing that comes to our mind is the logo. While a logo itself does not form an entire brand, it still acts as one of the founding blocks of a brand. A logo visually depicts your brand. There are many types of logos, the type-based, pictorial and a combination of both. Each style has its benefits. For example, a type-based logo will instantly convey your brand name, whereas the graphical element logo will help represent your brand uniquely. And a combination of both will provide a lot of flexibility for different applications. So choose a style that best suits your brand. Remember, logo creation doesn’t happen overnight just like your business didn’t happen overnight. Hire a branding agency to make the process easier.

2. A distinct form

A simple and unique form for your brand can be the driving force that makes your business successful. For instance, if you’re a brand that is all about sustainability and you ensure that your products and packaging align with this belief, then it reflects really well on your brand. So always make sure that your form is well thought out and carefully designed to reflect your brand values.

3. Brand colours

Believe it or not, colours have the power to influence emotions and sentiments. So when you’re deciding on a brand colour, study the colour theory and think about what you want your audience to feel when they associate with your brand.

4. Captivating brand name

A brand name should be simple yet memorable. A catchy brand name has the potential to become a descriptive noun or even a verb. Take, for example, the phrase “I will google it.” Here, Google has become more than just a brand name. It has become a verb that is synonymous with the word “search.” That’s the power of successful brand names. Brand names can be anything from made-up words, to founder’s name, initials, or a combination. Choose one that is simple yet captivating.

5. A language that reflects your brand

An intentional use of language is important with any brand. If you’re a tech brand, using words like powerful, futuristic, revolutionary, etc., can paint an image of advanced technology. Similarly, for brands like Disney, words like fantasy, dream, love builds an image of a magical place. That’s the power of language. So choose your language wisely to help your audience picture your brand.

6. Catchy taglines and slogans

A common feature of successful brands is their catchy taglines. When you think of KFC, you remember their catchphrase “finger lickin’ good,” or when you think about McDonald’s, you remember their “I’m loving it” tagline. These taglines are so simple yet so captivating and memorable for the consumers. Similarly, while deciding on your taglines or slogans, think of something simple that communicates your beliefs, services or even the brand tone. Basically, let your tagline speak for your brand.

7. Brand tone

With social media being a huge part of our lives, brands have also adopted this medium to communicate with their audience. While doing this, it is important to stay true to the brand identity you have built so far. The tone that you use to communicate will reinforce your brand values amongst the public and create a stronger brand identity. The tone could be anything from authoritative, motivational, to satirical, funny and quirky. It all depends on what you want your brand to be perceived as.

8. A mission statement

A business without a mission is like a vehicle without fuel. It has all the tech but without the fuel it wouldn’t go anywhere. That’s why a good mission statement for a brand is important to keep the brand’s intention, messaging and driving force clear and consistent. This will ultimately strengthen your brand values and the identity.

9. Genuine emotional connection with audience

A good brand always establishes an emotional connection with the audience. For example, when Coca Cola comes to mind, you think about a group of friends hanging out and sipping coke. This sort of emotion makes the consumer immediately think about grabbing a coke when they are out with their friends. That’s the power of building an emotional connection with the audience. This emotion usually surpasses the product itself. So give your brand a unique personality to establish a connection with the audience.

10. Brand appeal to the everyday customer

A common thing that most successful brands have is that they appeal to every customer, irrespective of their age or cultural background. These brands are universally accessible because they appeal to emotions and life experiences. Take, for example, the Happy Meal from McDonald’s. This is a product that appeals to kids and, by extension, the whole family. How do they appeal to the kids? By creating toys of their favourite characters. Similarly, to provide that brand appeal to your audience, think about the emotions and sentiments you can use. It could be family, trust, love, security, happiness, or any common emotions that will make you universally relatable.

11. Originality

Your uniqueness and originality of the brand will always help you stand out from the crowd. But in order to be different, do not opt for outrageous designs and crazy products. Sometimes a well thought out USP that focuses on something novel can make your brand successful. And always be willing to take calculated risks, as they may reap a bigger reward.

12. Consistency

Consistency is key to anything. If you’ve built a great brand but forget to be consistent, then all of it goes in vain. Imagine that you’ve built your entire brand on being authoritative and motivational, but suddenly you use sarcasm or humor with your audience. How will it make your customers feel? It will confuse them. Same with changing logos, colour palettes, etc. All of this will lead to brand inconsistency and ultimately destroy the brand identity you’ve created. So ensure that your branding, from the tone to the aesthetic, remains consistent.

There is no hard and fast rule to create a successful brand that remains timeless through the years. But one way to make sure your brand is memorable and communicates well with its audience is through careful planning and by remaining consistent.
